Built in 1904 as a Louis XVI-inspired mini-palace, Amade Château is an unexpected surprise on Slovakia's Great Rye Island, an hour outside Bratislava. Every inch, nook and cranny is crammed with character, history and style, and honours one of Hungary's best-known 18th-century poets, Baron László Amade: unabashed womaniser, globetrotter and hedonist. A touch flamboyant and eccentric, the château is surrounded by beautiful English gardens, while inside, French Romanticism is reflected by the feminine furnishings, candy pinks, pastel blues and lime greens. Amade can sleep up to 60 guests and has all the makings of a classic wedding venue. Only produce from local suppliers and that grown on the estate are used for the flavour-packed dishes.  And the vast wine cellar and on-site patisserie provide all the extras to make the event super-special. There's also a cigar lounge and lavish spa complete with Turkish hammam, three saunas (known as Sauna's World) and steam bath. But beyond the château's meticulously hand-painted walls, Great Rye's many attractions include thermal baths, sailing, boat trips and gold panning (this is Europe's largest river island after all).
